Flare of Protection

Most notable in this piece is the base and aluminum lighting head.  The base provides this sculpture with stability as well as an interesting story.  It was used as a pilot element to light off explosive gasses out of a flare stack in a refinery.  The highly polished aluminum head, by contrast, has the function of preventing explosions by containing all the arcing and sparking aspects to a light bulb turning on.  These light fixtures are typically used in a very dangerous atmosphere where a user must not ignite the air around them.    The light intensity on the lamp is controlled through a dimmer operated by simply rotating the stainless steel gear located in the middle center of the lamp. The finish is a durable powder coating.
