Metal Morphic is the pseudonym under which Scott Potter creates his artwork.  Scott grew up in Pasadena, California. As a young boy, he was driven to create. He would sand laminated plastic for hours on end to make interesting shapes from his imagination. The simple beauty of certain forms such as large pipes inspired him. For his twelfth birthday, he received his first industrial quality buffer-grinder, which gave him years of entertainment.

Industry was also an early fascination. As a teenager, Scott bicycled through the City of Industry, CA, and would often stop and sit for hours at the ominous factories and just take it all in. He was fascinated not only by the awesome power involved in the industrial processes, but more so by the awe-inspiring designs of the machines themselves. He came to look at industry as an artistic work in motion.

As an engineer for an environmental consulting firm in his adult life, he has worked around many  awe-inspiring places. His ability to design and set-up equipment for cleanup of environmental problems became a creative outlet. As his familiarity with the materials of construction evolved,  so did his appreciation for the aesthetic beauty of the industrial parts he used. Scott found that much of the beautiful industrial material was discarded for various reasons. He was inspired to collect these discards and give them new life. He began to see certain objects fulfilling great new purpose. A blow-molded plastic pallet provided inspiration for his first piece of functional art. The Pallet Lamp was something very unlike anything it was made for, totally new in appearance, and a highly useful lamp. This was the genesis of Scott’s concept of functional art.

Scott has tirelessly pursued this passion since 1984, making everything from bathroom installations, tables, beds, chairs, telephones, staircase railings, and candelabrums- to his forte, lamp sculptures. This work formed into the company Metal Morphic.  The expanding collection of found industrial objects continues to provide creative direction and inspiration. Metal Morphic is located in California's Central Coast. Much of the work is commissioned as well as creatively built with CAD drawings. Scott's goal is to produce highly finished and precision machined sculptures that stand out in a class of their own.  Construction methods include welding, plasma cutting, grinding, polishing, epoxy sculpting and powder coating.
